Summer Practices For The Win

Over the summer, most of the student body caught up on sleep or played games, but the Freedom sports teams did not. Between practices, camps, ropes courses and matches, they did it all. Golf Team The golf team got ahead of the game by having summer practices. “We golfed a round,”said Zac Wilson, a member of the golf team. There was a lot of bonding at the practices, such as getting to know each other better by improving their golfing ability. The golf team held a total of three practices and one match before school started. Boys’ Soccer Team The team ran to condition their muscles back into shape and ready themselves for the upcoming games. The boys’ soccer team started lifting weights and holding extra practices to get their ability even better for the upcoming season. For a week of September, the boys had a soccer camp of just straight endurance. Girls’ Soccer Team The girls’ team also held a camp, which members of the team said was fun and a great learning experience. “We have a lot of young members this year because we lost a lot of seniors last year,” said Emilee Handyside. She said that a lot of members had to step up this year and she believes that they have done so successfully. Volleyball Team With the new coaches, the team had an intense summer camp including: setting up the court, running a mile and starting drills all before 6:30 a.m. They also had try-outs at night that determined who was on the varsity and junior varsity teams. The team is currently holding night practices and are hoping for a successful season with their new coach. Cross Country The cross country team met multiple times over the summer to maintain and improve their running ability for the new season. “Possibly the best boys team in 11 years of teaching,” Mr Tinker, boy’s cross country coach, said. He also said that they hopefully have a shot at states this year. Football Team The football team learned all of the plays and also did drills to get into shape for the season. Besides the drills, the practice field has new restrictions. There is now a fence that surrounds the field. The team is hoping for a very successful year Junior Sam Beckey said.
