For as long as students are in school, teachers are here even longer. They arrive before most students and leave after them. Some teachers are here for ridiculous amounts. “The longest I’ve stayed at the school is 14 hours,” Mr. Fitzpatrick said. So to compensate for this time away from home, teachers have begun to “personalize” their rooms and, further yet, the area around their desks. Some have refrigerators, microwaves, coffee pots and more. This is just the area surrounding the desks. They have chairs that they have brought in so that they are even more comfortable while they work; teachers put in the time to grade papers, create projects and do what they can to make the subject they are teaching more understandable and fun. “It helps me get in the ‘teacher zone,’” Mr. Fitzpatrick said. There are also posters, quotes and previous student projects to bring color and make the room come to life. Some rooms are covered in such things that a person walking in a classroom for the first time might never think that the walls are originally white. For example, Mrs. Hastings room said “I tried to make my room seem interesting and in a way that I wouldn’t get bored.” Some teachers make jokes about how attached they are to their rooms. “I’ve thought about making my closet a pull out cot,” Mr. Fitzpatrick said. “There are nights I should just bring a bed to the school and stay because [if I am] leaving at nine at night and getting back here before seven in the morning it just becomes stupid to leave,” Mrs. Hastings said.
