Doubling up: Sitting next to each other, senior Lilly Burgess and sophomore Aubrey Boyd read through their jazz band sheet music together at the concert. Being the only two flute players in jazz band, the girls played with a microphone in front of their stands to amplify their instruments for the audience.

As the school year began to wind down, the middle and high school held their concerts on May 8th. Both chorus and band came together with a wide selection of songs to perform to their audience. The high school jazz band started off the night, following them was the high school then middle school choirs. After their performances, they took a quick break to set up for the bands. The 7th and 8th grade band went first, and finishing off the night was the high school band.

During the jazz band’s performance, 13 members of the high school band came together to play three songs. They started off the night with “Zero Gravity,” “Fat Cat” and “Chameleon.” During “Fat Cat” seniors Samuel Brenner and Dakota Gingerella played solos. Also in “Chameleon” Lilly Burgess, Brenner, and Gingerella performed an all-senior solo.

Next was the high school chorus, in which eight members sang a total of three songs. They performed “Shenandoah”, “Blue Skies”, and finished with “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” During their second song, freshman Mia Roncevich and sophomore Phoebe Smith performed a scat solo. After the high school choir, the 7th and 8th grade choir performed. They consisted of 21 students who sang three songs. They started with “Water is Wide” and then “Fireflies.” They finished with “Seasons of Love,” with Madison Capehart as a soloist.

Then, there was a short intermission to set the stage for the bands to perform. Sophomores Aubrey Boyd and Janna Kline were tasked with working the curtains for the night’s performances. Along with them, freshman and sophomores Audrey Mooney, Leo Kaulegher, Alex Micon,  Johnathan Bruce and Calla Reynolds helped set up the stage. During this time, seniors Lilly Burgess and Josephine Brenckle announced the winning 50/50 ticket. This was also a time for audience members to grab a snack from the concessions in the lobby. Shortly after, the audience gathered back into the auditorium to watch the rest of the concert.

First, the 7th and 8th grade band took the stage. Consisting of 45 students, they performed three total songs. They played “High Voltage”, “Over the Rainbow” and “Counting Stars”. During “Counting Stars,” Kimberly Streb was featured on the alto saxophone.

Concluding the night, the high school band joined the stage. The 29 students played a selection of four songs. They started with “Caribana Afterparty” and then played “Among the Clouds.” The band selected the song “How to Train Your Dragon” because during last year’s band trip to Florida, they watched the movie over and over. The song stuck with the band and they chose to perform it during the concert. The band took a short break to congratulate Brenckle as the Tom Taverna scholarship winner. Brenckle was announced as the winner. The band joined her in congratulating Ms. Rickard with a card and flowers thanking her for the season. The band finished the night with the Liberty Bell March.

Although this is not the end of the band season just yet, it is quickly coming to an end. The band will play their final performance of the year at the Memorial Day parades in Freedom and Conway on May 27th. The spring concert was a unifying experience between the junior and high school level music programs.
