With every new season, one sport starts while another one ends. For the boys’ basketball team, the start of February means the end of their season gradually coming closer. Despite not making it to playoffs, the Bulldogs were able to finish the season on a positive note.
“I think, overall, the kids played together, which was really good to see. We didn’t win as many games as we hoped, but there many good things over the course of the year,” assistant coach Jeff Griffith said when referring to how the season went.
One of the many highlights of the season was when senior Zach [Greene] tied the school record for most threes scored in a game during a home game.
Whenever a season ends, there are always a few seniors that graduate and must leave the team behind; however, with a lot of freshmen and sophomores on the team, concerns with filling in the seniors’ places doesn’t seem to be a huge problem. Junior Jason Norman commented on the freshmen, specifically freshman Tyler Borgman.
“Tyler Borgman is going to be nice, so wait on that one, and everybody else is going to form with him. He’s going to raise a good team, I know it,” Norman said.
“It always hurts when you lose good players, but I think we got a lot of good young players that will fill in for those guys,” Griffith stated on losing this year’s seniors.
On Feb. 6, the Bulldogs faced off against the Holy Family Saints at home. During that game, senior Zach Greene tied with the school record of nine three-pointers shot in one game. The boys kept a constant lead throughout the game and walked away with a victory of 75-46.
Feb. 10 was their third game of the week, the game where the seniors are recognized, and fundraisers are held in favor of the team and the school.
The Bulldogs played against the Mohawk Warriors. The whole duration of the game was very close. Both teams were neck and neck until the fourth quarter.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs began to take the lead with multiple players making three-point shots and regaining the ball from a rebound to gain more points. Some of those players included senior Nick Henderson and juniors Santino Guandolo and Javin Melvin. The outcome of the game was a win for the Bulldogs with a nearly 20-point lead of 73-54.
Feb. 13 was senior night for the boys’ basketball team. Before the game started, the four seniors on the team were recognized and their accomplishments both on and off season were acknowledged. The Bulldogs played against the Rochester Rams, a team that they faced twice already in the season. The game was a close fight between the Bulldogs and the Rams, but in the end the Bulldogs fell short and lost against the Rochester Rams.
With the season coming to a close, both players and coaches wish that they could have won more games; they can agree that the players worked well as a team this year and that the new players joining the team will add a new perspective on the court.
