We’ve got spir…actually no

You’re getting ready for one of your games. You’re excited, but as you’re walking out onto the field, you scan the bleachers in search of support. Who’s there? A few parents, maybe a younger sibling; but for the most part, there isn’t much of a fan base. There is a huge lack of support for our school. Whether it is students or faculty, there is plenty of room for more spirit at FHS. This all comes down to having a positive attitude. If there is a sports team that isn’t doing well, instead of criticizing them, you should go to their games and show your encouragement. Showing school spirit isn’t just limited to attending games. You can also show your spirit by simply putting on a red and white t-shirt or going to school-sponsored events such as the homecoming dance. Okay students, you may go to a football game every once in a while, and that’s great; however, let’s not forget that there are still other sports in Freedom. Let’s take the soccer teams for example. One of the boys’ soccer games I went to this year had approximately 12 students there to show support. Showing your support helps the team more than you sitting on Facebook posting a status that says “go soccer team! :).” Chances are, you’re friends with at least one person who’s involved in a sport, and after all, aren’t friends supposed to help each other out? Now faculty, I do see a lot of red and white on Fridays. However, what I don’t see is attendance to the sports events. Teachers showing support by attending events is just as important as peers showing support. Whether you live far away or have plans that evening, just go to a game or two. Although it’s not in your job description, the students will appreciate the support and you’ll have done your part. Of course, there are the devout students and faculty and that’s great; just be sure to persuade your peers to join in on the fun. Why should everybody go to show their support? It helps your peers and, in turn, will benefit our team morals and even our records. All that needs to be done by faculty and students is to wear red and white and actually go to a few events. Saying “great job,” to somebody in your class who scored a goal last night isn’t so difficult either. That being said, make sure you pay attention to DTV in the mornings to know when the home games are, wear your colors, and go to a few sporting events at FHS. I hope to see more attendance and school spirit at future games or meets. Good luck to all the teams and players!
