WPIAL Championship For Girls Track

Two months of hard work came to a pinnacle last Thursday the 7th of May when the girls track team went to WPIAL Championships and brought home the title. “After last year, finishing third at WPIAL Champs, they were determined this year,” Head Coach Ed Shepherd explains. “It was a real team effort.” The last time the girls won WPIAL Championships was in 2000, and this was the win that all the seniors were looking for to end the season and their high school career on a good note. “We all pushed each other to reach the team’s goal,” sophomore Sierra Boggs states. Leading our ladies on the distance team was Julia Kubica with her events in the mile, four by 800 meter relay, and the open 800. Laura Conrad placed first in the high jump, and third in the 100 meter hurdles. Ashley Adams once again swept both first places for shot put and discus, and Courtney Frain also earned a first place in javelin. For the jumpers, threesome Maggie Dietrich, Sierra Boggs, and Mariah McGlothlin all scored between long jump and triple jump. Post-win, our girls came home with a satisfied ego, and a huge, shiny trophy. The stance for success in years to come will be backed up by underclassmen that have now had the taste of success. Going to WPIALS last year and placing third was enough motivation for this year’s seniors to give it everything they had. The graduating class of 2009 is taking with them some of our most competitive athletes, but all the coaches have a positive outlook for the years to come.
