You can’t always get what you want: Why doesn’t Freedom have more spring sports?

Picture this: you arrive at a different school for a sporting event, and directly outside the window you see a lacrosse team practicing. Then you begin to wonder, “Why doesn’t Freedom have a lacrosse team?” Inside the school you see a boys’ volleyball team working in the gymnasium, and again you think, “Why doesn’t Freedom have a boys’ volleyball team?“ During the spring sports season, Freedom only offers two sports in which its students can participate – baseball or softball and track and field. But other schools, such as Quaker Valley and Beaver – that are similar in size to Freedom – offer more sports. Quaker Valley and Beaver are both AA schools, just like Freedom. Some people may argue that those schools have the money to do it and Freedom doesn’t. Yet, according to Beaver County’s official website, Freedom’s school taxes are the second lowest in Beaver County. These sports do not require a large amount of participation. A boys’ volleyball team only needs six players on the court at a time, plus a few substitutes. Lacrosse needs 10 players, which is less when compared to most fall sports whose teams demand at least 11 people, not including substitutions. Even with Freedom being in a messy financial situation, there are ways to gain funds for additional sports. For example, there are various sponsorship opportunities for the school board to consider. Denying students the opportunity to expand their athletic horizons because we don’t want to take money seems counterproductive to the goal of having a successful high school. Freedom’s recent sports seasons have not been as successful as prior years. Perhaps an investment in lacrosse, tennis or boys’ volleyball may be the morale boost the district needs to improve as a whole.
